Playing with maps

This weekend I've spent a little time playing with the mapping and transitions in D3, as I have an idea of somewhere I could use them on a project. Anyway, I've got as far as this tonight, which takes a csv of countries and values and displays different levels outflow from the UK, with a nice animation as it loads...

So in the example data here I have "France: 3, Russia: 6, South Africa: 2, Australia:10".

CRISP-DM

Cross industry standard procedure for data mining: A friend recommended this to me as a decent methodology for considering data science / mining projects. Although it's fairly old now (pre-2000), it has some useful concepts which you can use to articulate the stages of such a project (and to make sure you're not missing any...).

Open Data in the UK

There are literally thousands of free open data sets for the UK, with which you can do some pretty awesome things. Or if you're interested in just London, then there's a another load of localised sets

A quick search on here, plus an hour or two of munging and crunching, means you might never have to take a newspaper at its word again. Looking to open a shop, check where the best footfall, least crime is. Fast food chain? Check out obesity rates across the UK.
